Aiming to produce environment-friendly learners, the Senior High School (SHS) Department led a webinar last December 14,  in partnership with the Doha Environmental Actions Project (DEAP) to its grade 11 and 12 students. It anchored the theme, “Why, How, and When? Starting your Sustainability Journey in Qatar.”

Mr. Jose Saucedo, the DEAP director, advocated the fight against plastic waste and encouraged the PSDians to take part in minimizing the impact of plastic waste in the environment.

According to Saucedo, in one of the DEAP’s beach clean up drives, some 300 volunteers collected 5,000 kilograms of trash along a beach that stretched 300 meters long in just one hour. Hence, it reinforced PSDians’ pro-environment stance as he educated and empowered the youth to take action against plastic pollution.

While it is crucial to alleviate the issue, Saucedo also mentioned that conserving marine life is one of their top priorities since microplastics have entered the ocean’s food chain. Moreover, he says it is our responsibility to protect and care for the well-being of whale sharks and dugongs, as both are a part of the many endangered species in Qatar.

As it  envisions Qatar’s natural landscapes and heritage sites to be a source of pride and a litter-free space for future generations, DEAP is determined to resolve plastic pollution in everyday acts.Saucedo enumerated methods to reduce plastic use, such as using recyclable bags.

“We don’t need to use single-use plastics that will just be used for two minutes, but will be in the environment for 400 years.”

With this first environmental webinar, students were then left with a challenge  to begin their sustainable journey with these encouraging words, “Be passionate. It doesn’t matter how simple or complex your idea is (to pursue change in the environment), just go for it.”
